Photoshop styles are unrivaled by those of other available photo or graphic programs. The effect on the text layers is not much better than that in Word or PowerPoint styles, and you can only view the results after the filter has been applied. GIMP’s styles for the text are the same as the filters for objects that are applied to the selected layer. The second essential on my list is Styles, especially for the text layers. In other words, they work well if you keep in mind that they are free. They do the job almost as well as the Lasso tools from Photoshop and would not be a dealbreaker for GIMP.

The Free Selection tool and the Intelligent Scissors are “good enough” if you cannot afford your Photoshop. I don’t like GIMP’s Fuzzy Select tool, and the By Color tool seems superfluous. The Lasso tools from Photoshop are absolutely the best, especially the Magnetic Lasso, which seems to instinctively know what you want to select. GIMP has seven selection tools, while Photoshop 2020 has ten: If you cannot select the foreground objects or the background, you cannot edit much. The Selection Tools are number one on my list of requirements. Photoshop: Which is better? Free software such as GIMP will always be more attractive than subscription-based models such as Photoshop, especially for individual users who are not eligible for a government or corporate discount. I know it is not fair to compare anything to the rich Photoshop universe without including the price.
I now have 25 years of experience with Photoshop, of which I teach Photoshop for 14 years. This free alternative is often portrayed as something that Photoshop can replace or is even better, but is that so? We sorted it out. However, if costs are discussed (or open source / Linux), GIMP will soon come around. This package is so popular that it has even become a verb. If you do not tick this option, you might be selecting nothing from the active layer. When talking about image editing, chances are that the word Photoshop will fall. For photographers, there is a rule-of-thirds option, quite useful when defining image crops. Or rather, selection dimensions can be defined by numeric input, fixing (if needed) selection width or height, from the drop-down menu. In case of rectangular or elliptic selection, a form-factor can be fixed prior to the selection, independently of the size. In square or rectangular selections, you can also check (11) to produce rounded corners (useful to add some vignetting or washed look to pictures).Ĭheckbox (12) produces selection (either rectangular or elliptic) from the central point - we could already do this with keyboard shortcuts. Some further icons in the lower section (9) complement the keyboard shortcuts described in the previoous post: Individual selection, addition, subtraction and intersection. Icons (6) and (7) are "special", and they will be presented in a separate post. In the below image, you may see the following icons:Ĥ - Adjacent colour selection ("magic wand")

In a previous post, I described how to make basic selections, and more complex ones by combining areas by addition and subtraction.īesides that, GIMP provides advanced tools to improve selection, which can achieve non-visible contours that will give your work a professional look.Īccess to selection tools and their modification is centred in the generic tool window, with specific icons for each selection mode.
